Hunter Biden, the 54-year-old son of President Joe Biden, has been convicted on all three felony counts related to his 2018 purchase of a handgun while being addicted to drugs.
This verdict arrives as President Biden is seeking reelection and on a day when he is scheduled to address gun violence in Washington.
Following the trial held in Wilmington, Delaware, the President issued a statement through the White House expressing his “love and support” for his son.
“I am the President, but I am also a Dad,” Biden stated. “Jill and I love our son, and we are so proud of the man he is today.
Many families who have had loved ones battle addiction understand the pride of seeing someone come out stronger and more resilient.”
President Biden acknowledged the trial’s outcome, affirming his respect for the judicial process as Hunter Biden considers an appeal.
The 12-member jury reached their verdict after three hours of deliberation over two days. Hunter Biden did not testify during the one-week trial, although First Lady Jill Biden attended several sessions.
While Hunter Biden could face up to 25 years in prison, jail time is unlikely given his status as a first-time offender. This verdict follows closely on the heels of the business fraud conviction of Donald Trump, President Biden’s likely opponent in the upcoming November election.
