In a significant breakthrough, the Edo State Police Command has apprehended a 19-year-old female kidnapper and several cultists in a series of coordinated operations.
The young suspect, identified as Rebecca Johnson, was arrested alongside three notorious cultists believed to be responsible for a string of violent crimes in the region.
The arrest was made possible through diligent investigative work and a tip-off from a concerned citizen.
According to Police Commissioner, Mr. Johnson Kokumo, the operations were carried out in the early hours of Monday morning.
He stated that the suspects had been under surveillance for weeks, and the police were finally able to corner them in their hideout in Benin City.
Rebecca Johnson, who is said to be the mastermind behind several kidnapping incidents, confessed to her involvement during interrogation.
She revealed that she had been lured into the criminal activities by one of the cultists, who promised her financial security and protection.
The police also recovered several weapons, including firearms and machetes, from the hideout.
The Commissioner highlighted the alarming rise in youth involvement in criminal activities, particularly kidnapping and cultism.
He stressed the need for community vigilance and cooperation with law enforcement agencies to curb this menace.
“We are calling on parents, guardians, and community leaders to be more attentive to the activities of their youths and report any suspicious behavior to the authorities,” Mr. Kokumo urged.
The arrest of the cultists, identified as members of the dreaded Eiye Confraternity, marks a significant victory in the fight against cult-related violence in Edo State.
The cultists, known for their brutal initiation rituals and territorial battles, have been terrorizing the residents of Benin City and its environs.
The police have vowed to intensify their efforts to dismantle these criminal networks.
Rebecca and the other suspects are currently in police custody and will be charged to court upon the completion of the investigation.
The Edo State Police Command has assured the public that justice will be served and that the suspects will face the full wrath of the law.
Residents of Edo State have expressed relief and commended the police for their swift action.
Many have called for increased security measures and community policing initiatives to ensure the safety and security of all citizens.
The police have reiterated their commitment to maintaining law and order and protecting the lives and property of the people.
