The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced that the ongoing nationwide strike will persist, despite reaching an agreement with the Federal Government on Monday.
The strike, which has brought the nation’s economy to a standstill, will continue until the NLC’s organs meet to review the agreement.
The NLC made the announcement in a post on Tuesday, stating that the industrial action will persist until the union’s organs meet on June 4 to review the resolutions reached on Monday.
The strike has grounded businesses, airports, schools, banks, and public institutions across the country.
In a related development, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced a complete shutdown of Nigeria’s power grid by labour unions. The shutdown, which occurred at 2:19 am on June 3, has resulted in a nationwide blackout.
According to TCN, the labour union deliberately shut down the national grid, forcing the closure of transmission substations and power generating units.
The shutdown has affected bulk electricity supply to distribution load centers nationwide, with the labour union still obstructing grid recovery efforts.
The NLC’s decision to continue the strike, combined with the shutdown of the power grid, has plunged the nation into chaos. The Federal Government must urgently address the demands of the labour unions to prevent further economic hardship and instability.
