Alarming Rise in Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Cases in Nigeria Despite VAPP Act

Despite efforts to combat Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) through the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act (VAPP) and advocacy campaigns, recent data reveals a disturbing increase in SGBV cases in Nigeria.

The VAPP Act, signed into law in 2015, criminalizes violence against persons, including SGBV, and provides compensation for victims and punishment for perpetrators.

According to data from the national gender-based violence dashboard website, there have been:
43,248 reported cases of GBV, 2,097 fatal cases, 636 convicted perpetrators

The monthly breakdown for 2024 shows:

May: 74 cases, April: 941 cases, March: 1,904 cases (a significant spike).
